A top killer disease. A disease with no symptoms. A disease that most people suffering from it don't know they have it – Hypertension

Hypertension

Hypertension is when too much pressure is exerted on your artery walls.

While some people may experience headaches, hypertension generally has no symptoms. By itself, hypertension is reversible. But when it's left uncontrolled for long, it leads to irreversible damage.

High blood pressure nukes your delicate organs like the eyes, kidneys, heart, arterial blood vessels, and the brain.

This manifest as:

  • Retinopathy
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Stroke

Basically most of the conditions you wouldn't wish even on your worst enemy.

Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90. The higher the numbers go, the severe it gets, and the higher the damage done. The longer it takes you to start bringing your blood pressure down. The harder it will be to undo the damage done.

How do you reverse hypertension?

To reverse a disease, you must resolve the root cause. Antihypertensive drugs like diuretics only work to artificially bring blood pressure down. But high blood pressure IS NOT the root cause of hypertension. It is just the symptom.

While using antihypertensive drugs may be critical, it'll not reverse hypertension. The root cause is insulin resistance (IR). Reversing IR will in turn reverses hypertension.

You cannot medicate yourself out of hypertension, because no pill can resolve IR.

IR is a response by cells to persistent high levels of insulin. As cells become less sensitive, more insulin is needed to deliver the same effect. Thus insulin levels are always higher than expected. Through diverse ways, IR causes hypertension.

To reverse IR, you have to maintain low insulin levels for long periods & avoid sharp insulin spikes. In turn, cells will gradually become sensitive to insulin again. Insulin release is stimulated by a rise in blood sugar.

Therefore, reversing IR (and thus hypertension) largely involves avoiding rises in blood sugar.

How to keep blood sugar low

  1. Avoid sugar & refined carbs

Sugar & refined carbs raise blood sugar (and thus insulin) way more than any other foods.

Avoid added sugars like table sugar (sucrose), high fructose corn syrup, honey, malt etc.

Avoid refined carbs like white flours, white rice, bread, pasta, breakfast cereal etc.

  2. Go low-carb

Avoiding sugar & refined carbs is a big step but still not enough. You need to restrict all carbs entirely. Going low-carb basically means avoiding all foods that have high carb content.

They include wheat, corn, rice, potatoes, cassava, oats, beans, lentils, peas etc.

  3. Prioritize proteins

Proteins just have a minimal effect on blood sugar. They are your ally here. Let your meals have more proteins like meats, organs, eggs, fish, chicken, & nuts.

  4. Increase natural fats

Fats are the only foods without any effect on blood sugars or insulin. Increase your intake of natural fats in meats, eggs, fish, pork, nuts, avocado, butter etc. But you can rarely eat fats by themseleves, they come attached to other foods, especially proteins (meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, dairy products).

However, it is important to eliminate highly processed and refined oils like the ‘vegetable’/seed oils. They are unhealthy and will impede the hypertension reversal process.

  5. Fast

Since most types of meals will likely have some effect on blood sugars, eating nothing at all (fasting) is by far the most powerful weapon in keeping insulin levels low. Fasting will leave your blood sugars untouched for longer.

There's no one "best" way of fasting. You can do it anyhow, anytime, start it at any time, end it at any time too. Yes, fasting is that flexible. You can fast for 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, 72, or 96 hours, or even a week. It's what works for you.

  6. Refrain from snacking

You won't reverse insulin resistance if you keep stimulating insulin release every now and then. Snacking thwarts every effort by your body to heal from insulin resistance. Just don't snack.
